Bright, alert, inquisitive, loyal and affectionate, the tiny Chihuahua - the smallest of all dogs. This is a breed that is big on personality, the Chihuahua is ready to take on the world.

Chihuahua

Like all the Toy breeds, the Chihuahua is first and foremost a companion dog, and comes under the umbrella title of being a ”lap dog”. He is very happy to be cuddled on a lap. However, it would be a mistake to think that this all a Chihuahua does. This highly intelligent little dog thrives on having things to do. He is interested in everything that is going on, and is always eager to get involved. The Chihuahua can be trained in a number of different disciplines, including Competitive Obedience and Agility. The Chihuahua is the perfect therapy dog, bringing comfort to both children and adults in need, and, as an added bonus, he takes the show ring by storm.

The modern Chihuahua comes in two varieties: long coat and smooth coat. Today, the long coat and the smooth coat are show in separate classes, but apart from length of coat, the varieties are identical in both character and conformation. Today, the Chihuahua is slightly bigger, heavier dog than it once was, but this has resulted in a major improvement in its overall health. This can only be good news for the breed. Now we have a Toy dog that is a wonderful companion, and is small enough to go everywhere. Just do not forget to carry him if he is tired or put it in his bag or cabin.

If you decide that the Chihuahua is the breed for you, make sure you are both fully aware of he breed’s strengths and potential problems and ready to deal with these issues. The breed is a favorite among dog owners for many excellent reasons, including these:
